Bon Secours Auditors Mend Cots

December 22, 2009

On a typical winter evening, CARITAS utilizes approximately 200 cots at various shelter sites around the metro area.  These cots are built for short term emergency situations, but due to the fluid nature of our program, they are utilized for months at a time.  Naturally, given the daily demands of our program some cots are broken on a regular basis.  Fortunately, we have volunteers who are willing and able to help keep our cots in repair for the clients we work together to serve.

On December 15 one such group paid a visit to our building in northside Richmond.  Led by Mike Michalowicz (second from left) a group of eight auditors (and one husband) from Bon Secours took time away from the office to dedicate their workday to repairing broken cots.  This energetic group stripped unusable canvas mats and replaced them with new mats that had been purchased from our cot distributor.  Within three hours the team had stripped the mats from 58 cots, set aside 8 steel frames and hundreds of steel springs for recycling, replaced the mats on 50 cots, and saved CARITAS approximately $1000.00 by refurbishing cots instead of purchasing replacements.

We are pleased to have the support of this group of dedicated volunteers.  We send a great big “thank you” to our friends at Bon Secours auditing and blessings for Christmas and the new year!
