CARITAS Furniture Bank works with over 30 agencies in the greater Richmond area with a shared vision to assist families that are moving out of homelessness and crisis intervention programs. Through these partnerships, we provide furnishings to more than 250 households per year. Here is the story of Pat L., who was referred to us by The Rehabilitation Center for Blind and Impaired Vision.
In 2006, Pat L. was secure in her own home with a well-paying job and good health.
All that changed in what seemed a blink of an eye when Pat was diagnosed with glaucoma, a case so severe that her doctors were amazed that she was not already completely blind. In the following days and months Pat’s health deteriorated. She could no longer read, drive nor watch TV. Even a simple task, like bending over to pick up something, was impossible. Consequently, Pat lost her job and her home.
Yet, with a grace and resolve characteristic of her spirit, Pat determined to take the steps she needed to put her life back on track. And, she quickly learned that there were many organizations and people in place ready to walk with her on this difficult road.
Her journey began at The Rehabilitation Center for Blind and Impaired Vision. Through the center, Pat participated in programs to help her learn how to live independently and rejoin the work force. She was also able to find a new place to live and the center immediately referred her to CARITAS Furniture Bank to help furnish her new home.
With the help of volunteers at CARITAS Furniture Bank, Pat was able to select a bed, table and chairs, and just about anything else she needed for her home. Because of her diminished vision, volunteers paid particular attention to details that would help Pat select items that reflected her own personal taste and style, a bedspread speckled with red flowers and a floral lampshade, a shelf for family photos, a radio and TV.
